Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constable’s Deputies will be safer when they are on patrol or responding to calls thanks to a grant from The 100 Club for new body armor.
Rick Hartley, executive director of The 100 Club, and Ted Lyons, Board of Directors president of The 100 Club, met with Precinct 4 Constable Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden on Dec. 8 to see the of 24 vests they approved and discuss the possibility of developing a patch for The 100 Club that they could sew onto the vests.
“In March 2014, we submitted our request for new vests along with a price quote and specifications to The 100 Club’s finance and request committee to replace our five-year old body armor,” Hayden said. “The life of body armor, on average, is about five years so it was time to replace our vests.” The request was for $23,756.40 to buy 24 concealable body armor units through the company, Point Blank.
In May 2014, Hayden and Chief Barry Welch presented a formal presentation to The 100 Club Board of Directors and it was approved. They placed to order in June 2014 and recently received them. They will distribute them to deputies as soon as they can.
“The 100 Club does so much for law enforcement and fire services,” Hayden said. “The 100 Club does help in times of desperate need but also works with departments and agencies to provide body armor like this to prevent a tragedy. We are happy to partner with The 100 Club.”
The 100 Club Board of Directors started the initiative of providing life-protecting equipment in 1972. To date, they have provided around $12 million worth of this equipment for law enforcement.
They serve an 18 county area surrounding the Houston area which includes Montgomery County. The 100 Club is able to provide life saving equipment thanks to donations from almost 30,000 members and they encourage residents to sign up for club and donate.
“The Board of Directors realized that crime doesn’t stop at the city limits or county line so we wanted to cover as many areas as possible,” Hartley said.
